A nightstand is a small piece that you use every single day. It holds your lamp, phone, glass of water and the book you're halfway through, so it needs the right height and enough space without crowding the bed.
This category includes bedside tables with drawers, open-shelf nightstands, floating and wall-mounted designs, and nightstands with built-in charging and LED lights.
Height is the most important measurement. The top of the nightstand should be about level with the top of your mattress, or up to a few inches lower. Much higher or lower and reaching it from bed gets awkward.
Width depends on your room and bed. On a queen or king bed, a nightstand around 20 to 28 inches wide looks balanced. In a small bedroom, a narrow table of 15 to 18 inches, or a wall-mounted shelf, saves valuable floor space.
Think about what you keep at the bedside. Drawers hide clutter like chargers, glasses and medication, while open shelves are handy for books. Nightstands don't have to match the bed exactly, but keeping the height and tone similar on both sides makes the room feel calm and put together.
