A rug can completely change a room. It adds color and softness underfoot, helps with echo in rooms with hard floors, and ties furniture together into one comfortable group.
This category includes area rugs in vintage, bohemian, modern and neutral styles, washable rugs, runners for hallways and kitchens, and round rugs for dining areas and entryways.
Size is the most common mistake with rugs. Most rugs that look wrong are simply too small. In a living room, aim for a rug large enough that at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it; 8 x 10 feet suits many living rooms. Under a queen bed, an 8 x 10 rug usually extends nicely on each side. Under a dining table, the rug should reach at least 24 inches beyond the table edge so chairs stay on it when pulled out. Use a rug pad to stop slipping and protect your floors. In busy areas and homes with pets or kids, low-pile and washable rugs are easier to keep clean.
