Lighting changes how a room feels more than almost anything else. The same living room can feel warm and relaxed or flat and dull depending on where the light comes from and how bright it is.

A good room usually has more than one light source. Designers talk about three layers: ambient light that fills the room, task light for reading or cooking, and accent light that adds warmth. Pay attention to color temperature. Around 2700K gives a warm, cozy glow for living rooms and bedrooms, while 4000K is crisper for kitchens and workspaces. Check whether a fixture needs hardwiring or plugs in, and whether bulbs are included.
