Flush and semi-flush ceiling lights for everyday rooms
The ceiling light is the workhorse of a room. It's what you switch on first when you walk in, so it's worth getting one that gives good, even light and looks right in the space.
In this category you'll find flush mount fixtures that sit tight against the ceiling, semi-flush designs that drop down a few inches, and LED panels and modern shapes in metal, glass and fabric. Many are LED, which means lower energy use and no bulbs to replace for years.
Ceiling height decides the style. In rooms with standard 8-foot ceilings, or anywhere people walk underneath, a flush mount keeps the light out of the way. With 9 feet or more, a semi-flush fixture adds a bit more character without feeling low.
For size, a simple rule works well: add the room's length and width in feet, and use that number in inches as the fixture diameter. A 12 x 12 ft bedroom suits a light about 24 inches across.
