Changing cushion covers is one of the quickest, cheapest ways to give a room a new look. A few fresh covers can take a sofa from plain to inviting, or shift a bedroom from summer brights to cozy winter tones, in five minutes.

Size is important. Check the cover dimensions against your cushion inserts. A good trick is to use an insert about 2 inches bigger than the cover, so an 18 x 18 inch cover with a 20 x 20 inch insert. That gives a full, plump look instead of saggy corners.
For styling, mix sizes and textures. On a standard sofa, two 20-inch cushions at the ends with two 18-inch ones in front looks balanced. Combine a solid, a texture and a pattern in a shared color family for a pulled-together look.
Hidden zippers make covers easy to remove and wash. Check the care label, since velvet and faux fur often do best on a gentle, cold cycle.
