Lighting has more effect on how a room feels than almost anything else. The same space can feel warm and welcoming or cold and flat, depending on where the light comes from and what kind of light it is.
This category includes table and floor lamps, pendant lights, chandeliers, wall lamps and sconces, ceiling fixtures and decorative lighting for every room in the house.
Most rooms look best with light at several levels. Overhead fixtures give general light, lamps and wall lights add warmth at eye level, and small accent lights highlight art or shelves. Using two or three sources lets you change the mood easily, from bright and practical to soft and relaxed.
Bulb color matters as much as the fixture. Warm white around 2700K feels cozy in living rooms and bedrooms, while 3000 to 4000K is crisper for kitchens, bathrooms and work areas.
For pendants and chandeliers, size and hanging height are important. Over a dining table, hang the bottom of the fixture about 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. Our free chandelier size calculator suggests the right diameter and height for your room.
