How this calculator works
The calculator adds each bed's mattress size to a typical frame allowance (4 inches wider and 8 inches longer, for the frame and headboard). It then checks whether there's enough space around it.
On each side, it needs room for whichever is wider: your walking space or your nightstand. Comfortable walking space is 30 inches; 24 inches is the minimum. At the foot of the bed it leaves the same walking space, or 36 inches in front of a dresser so the drawers can open.
Each bed size is marked “Fits well”, “Tight” (fits only with 24 inches of walking space) or “Doesn't fit”, and the largest size that fits well is recommended.
Tips for a better result
Measure the wall the headboard goes on
The headboard wall decides how wide a bed you can have. Measure it at bed height rather than at the skirting board, because a bay window, radiator or sloping ceiling may cut into the space.
Remember the door and the wardrobe
A bed can fit the room and still block a wardrobe door or the way in. Check that doors, sliding wardrobes and drawers can open fully with the bed in position.
Frames and headboards differ
A slim platform frame can be only 2 inches wider than the mattress, while a wide upholstered frame can add 8 or more. If you already have a frame in mind, use the advanced settings to enter its real size.
Delivery matters too
A king mattress is heavy and awkward on stairs. Check that it can get through the front door and around any tight corners before you decide on the biggest size that fits the room.
Limitations of This Estimate
The calculator assumes a rectangular room with the bed centred on the headboard wall and nothing else on that wall. A bed pushed into a corner, an alcove or against a sloping ceiling needs different spacing.
Mattress sizes follow US standards. UK, European and Australian sizes are slightly different, so check the exact size of the bed you want and enter it through the advanced frame allowance if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. A king bed with its frame is about 80 inches wide, which leaves about 32 inches on each side in a 12-foot-wide room. That's enough for 20-inch nightstands and a walkway. There's about 56 inches left at the foot of the bed: enough for a walkway, or for an 18-inch-deep dresser with just enough room to open its drawers.
About 9 feet 4 inches by 9 feet 4 inches, which gives 24 inches of walking space on both sides and at the foot. For comfortable 30-inch walkways, aim for at least 10 feet 4 inches wide by 9 feet 10 inches long.
At least 24 inches on each side and at the foot to walk comfortably; 30 inches feels comfortable and 36 inches feels roomy. If a dresser faces the bed, leave 36 inches between them so you can open the drawers.
Most queen beds suit nightstands 18 to 24 inches wide. Choose one whose top is level with the top of the mattress or up to 4 inches higher, so it's easy to reach from bed. Leave at least 24 inches of walking space beside it.
