Splitting the electric bill evenly is simple, but it's not always fair — someone who works from home and runs the AC all day uses a lot more power than a roommate who's rarely there. This calculator starts everyone at an equal share, then adjusts for usage.
1. Equal split — the starting point, before any adjustments:
equal_share = bill ÷ roommates
2. Fair adjusted split — each roommate's equal share, adjusted for how much they actually use:
adjusted_share = equal_share + usage_premium
If someone uses more AC/heater or spends more time at home, they pay more — usage level, room size, and AC/heater use are independent, stackable adjustments. A roommate who's above-average on all three gets all three premiums applied; a roommate who's below-average on all three gets a discount on all three.
3. Rebalancing — because premiums add cost and discounts remove it, the raw adjusted shares are rescaled proportionally so the roommates' shares always add up to exactly the total bill — nobody pays more or less than the whole amount between them.
Example calculation — using this calculator's default values: a $180 total bill split between 3 roommates, with a 10% usage difference, an 8% room size factor, and a 12% AC/heater factor. By default, Roommate 1 has above-average usage, the larger room, and above-average AC/heater use; Roommate 2 has below-average usage, the smaller room, and below-average AC/heater use; Roommate 3 is average across the board:
equal_share = 180 ÷ 3 = $60.00
Roommate 1 (above usage + larger room + more AC/heater) = 60 × (1 + 0.10 + 0.08 + 0.12) = 60 × 1.30 = $78.00
Roommate 2 (below usage + smaller room + less AC/heater) = 60 × (1 − 0.10 − 0.08 − 0.12) = 60 × 0.70 = $42.00
Roommate 3 (average usage, standard room, average AC/heater) = 60 × 1.00 = $60.00
tentative total = 78 + 42 + 60 = $180.00
scale = 180 ÷ 180 = 1.0000
Because Roommate 1's premiums and Roommate 2's discounts are equal and opposite, the tentative total already matches the bill exactly, so the scale factor is 1 and no rescaling is needed. With these defaults, Roommate 1 pays $78.00, Roommate 2 pays $42.00, and Roommate 3 pays $60.00 — the three shares add up to exactly the $180.00 total bill.
A larger bedroom generally takes more energy to heat and cool and often has more outlets and lighting running at once. Marking a roommate's room as "Larger" or "Smaller" applies the room size factor percentage to their share.
Heating and cooling is usually the single biggest driver of a home's electric bill, which is why the AC/heater factor is often set higher than the other two adjustments. A roommate who runs a window unit or space heater constantly is using noticeably more power than one who doesn't.
The "usage level" setting is a general stand-in for how much of the day someone's actually home using electricity — lights, chargers, TVs, and computers all add up differently for someone who's out most of the day versus someone who's home around the clock.
A roommate who works from home is typically running a computer, monitors, and often their own heating or cooling for extra hours every weekday that the others aren't home to share. That usually justifies setting their usage level (and possibly AC/heater use) to above-average.
A room with a mini-fridge, gaming PC, space heater, or window AC unit draws meaningfully more power than a room with none of those. If a roommate's setup is unusually appliance-heavy, it's reasonable to bump their usage level or AC/heater setting up a notch even if their room isn't physically larger.
Decide together which factors matter — usage level, room size, AC/heater use, or some combination — before a disagreement over who "runs the AC too much" comes up. It's much easier to agree on a fair method up front than to renegotiate mid-lease.
AC and heater use swings a lot between summer and winter, and someone's work-from-home schedule can change too. Rerun the calculator each season, or whenever someone's habits change, rather than locking in one split for the whole year.
A cheap smart plug or plug-in energy monitor can show roughly how much power a space heater, window AC unit, or gaming PC actually draws. That real data makes it easier to agree on a fair AC/heater or usage percentage instead of guessing.
Once everyone agrees on a fair split, write it down — in a roommate agreement, a shared document, or a group chat message everyone confirms. This avoids confusion later, especially if a roommate moves out and someone new joins.
This calculator gives you a reasonable starting point for a conversation, not a metered, exact answer. It works from percentages you set yourself — it doesn't measure actual per-room electricity usage, so the result is only as fair as the usage level, room size, and AC/heater settings you and your roommates agree are accurate.
It also doesn't automatically track seasonal usage shifts — a split that's fair in the summer (when AC use is high) may not be fair in the winter, so you'll need to rerun it as habits change. And it splits based on each roommate's own settings only; it doesn't separately account for shared common-area usage like a shared living room TV, kitchen appliances, or a communal washer/dryer, which everyone typically uses roughly equally regardless of room.
Usage premiums and discounts are applied first, then every roommate's share is rescaled proportionally so the totals always match your actual bill exactly. This keeps the split fair without anyone accidentally overpaying or underpaying the electric company.

Set the room size factor percentage to 0, or leave every roommate's room size at "Standard room" — that adjustment simply won't apply, and only usage level and AC/heater use will affect the split.
There's no universal rule — common starting points are 8–12% for usage differences and room size, and slightly higher (10–15%) for AC/heater use, since heating and cooling are often the single biggest driver of a home's electric bill. Adjust these to whatever feels fair for your household.
Set that roommate's usage level to "Above-avg. usage" — they're running a computer, lights, and often their own heating or cooling for extra hours every weekday that the rest of the household isn't home to share. If they also run a space heater or AC unit at their desk, set their AC/heater use to above-average too.
Set their "AC/heater use" to "Uses AC/heater more (+)" and make sure the AC/heater use factor percentage reflects how big a difference that actually makes — since heating and cooling is often the largest single driver of an electric bill, it's common to set this factor higher than the usage or room size percentages.
This calculator adjusts based on each roommate's own room and habits, not shared common-area usage. If your household's common-area electricity use (a shared TV, kitchen appliances, hallway lighting) is significant, many roommates simply treat that as part of the equal baseline everyone shares, and only adjust for the individual differences this calculator covers.
This calculator splits one full bill among the roommates you enter — it doesn't prorate by days. For a mid-month move-out, it's usually simplest to run the calculator once for the days the departing roommate was there (with them included) and once for the remainder of the month (without them), then add each roommate's totals from both periods.
