Coffee Table Size Calculator

The right coffee table is easy to reach from every seat and doesn't block the walkway. Enter your sofa size and the space in front of it to get the ideal coffee table length, height, depth and distance from the sofa.

How this calculator works

Designers size a coffee table from the sofa. It should be between half and two-thirds the length of the sofa, so it looks in proportion and everyone seated can reach it. Its height should match the sofa seat or sit up to 2 inches lower, which is usually 16 to 18 inches.

The calculator then checks the depth. It leaves 16 inches between the sofa and the table and at least 18 inches on the far side for walking. Whatever space is left is the deepest table that fits, up to 30 inches.

For sectionals and smaller rooms, it also suggests a round table, which has no corners to walk into and works from every side of an L-shaped sofa.

Tips for a better result

Measure the seat, not the sofa back

Seat height is measured from the floor to the top of the seat cushion while you are not sitting on it. A soft cushion sinks, so a table level with the unloaded cushion ends up feeling slightly high.

Match the table to how you use it

If it is mostly a place for a drink and a book, aim for the middle of the length range. If the family eats, plays games or puts feet up there, go for the ideal length and the full depth the space allows.

Think about the legs and the top

A table with open legs or a glass top looks lighter in a small room. A solid chunky base uses the same floor space but feels bigger, so you may want to go one size down.

Leave a clear route to the sofa

Check that the table does not block the path from the door to the sofa. If people walk through the gap often, give it the full 18 inches on the far side rather than the minimum.

Limitations of This Estimate

These are proportion guides for a typical living room, not strict rules. A table slightly outside the range can still work if the room is open and there is plenty of space around it. The calculator treats the sofa as a straight run, so for a sectional enter the length of the longest seating side.

The depth limit assumes the table sits straight in front of the sofa. If it sits off to one side, or the room has a rug or media unit nearby, check those distances separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

About two-thirds of the sofa's length, and no less than half. For an 84-inch sofa that means a table 42 to 56 inches long, with 56 inches being ideal.

The same height as your sofa seat, or up to 2 inches lower. Most sofa seats are 17 to 19 inches high, so most coffee tables are 16 to 18 inches tall.

14 to 18 inches, with 16 inches being ideal. You can reach your drink without leaning forward, and there's still room for your legs and to walk past.

Round tables usually work better in small rooms and with sectionals: there are no corners to bump into, and they're easier to walk around. A 30 to 42 inch round table suits most sofas up to 84 inches. Rectangular tables suit long, straight sofas where you want the table to reach every seat.
